Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. Printmaking normally covers only the process of creating prints with an element of originality, rather than just being a photographic reproduction of a painting. Except in the case of monotyping, the process is capable of producing multiples of the same piece, which is called a 'print'. Each piece produced is not a copy but considered an original since it is not a reproduction of another work of art and is technically (more correctly) known as an 'impression'. Printmaking (other than monotyping) is not chosen only for its ability to produce multiple copies, but rather for the unique qualities that each of the printmaking processes lends itself to.

Prints are created from a single original surface, known technically as a matrix. Common types of matrices include: plates of metal, usually copper or zinc for engraving or etching; stone, used for lithography; blocks of wood for woodcuts, linoleum for linocuts and fabric plates for screen-printing. But there are many other kinds of matrix substrates and related processes discussed below.

Works printed from a single plate create an edition, in modern times usually each signed and numbered to form a limited edition. Prints may also be published in book form, as artist's books. A single print could be the product of one or multiple techniques.

why soak the paper when printing an etched image in printmaking?
Q. what does soaking the paper then blotting it do for the final print?

A. Soak and drain, the fibres soften, giving a crisp image, acid free paper contains starch, it allows a tooth for the ink to grip when you dampen down. try to experiment with dry damp and wet paper you will see that when the paper is not blotted the image can blur where your etching is not sharp. regards LF

Why is the art of printmaking so popular today when previosly prints were primarily used for book illustration
Q. Why is the art of printmaking so popular today when previosly prints were primarily used for book illustration

A. There are more, and more accessible, ways of printmaking now, and papers to do it with. Japanese prints into Europe at the end of the 19thC established prints as a "respectable" and collectable art form, distinct from mere reproductions (which were anyway more limited by available techniques then). The emergence of the middle class created a market of people who wanted wall decorations not limited to "holy" pictures. In modern times, artists (and galleries) find the sales of a multiple work, at consequently reduced item prices, both easier and more profitable than trying to sell unique originals, which must command higher prices on fewer sales, so artist and gallery can eat! So the market is cultivated, and effectively feeds on itself. [cont.]
