From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. It is the feeling common to such experiences as stubbing a toe, burning a finger, putting iodine on a cut, and bumping the "funny bone". Pain motivates us to withdraw from damaging or potentially damaging situations, protect the damaged body part while it heals, and avoid those situations in the future. It is initiated by stimulation of nociceptors in the peripheral nervous system, or by damage to or malfunction of the peripheral or central nervous systems. Most pain resolves promptly once the painful stimulus is removed and the body has healed, but sometimes pain persists despite removal of the stimulus and apparent healing of the body; and sometimes pain arises in the absence of any detectable stimulus, damage or pathology. Pain is the most common reason for physician consultation in the United States. It is a major symptom in many medical conditions, and can significantly interfere with a person's quality of life and general functioning. Social support, hypnotic suggestion, excitement in sport or war, distraction, and appraisal can all significantly modulate pain's intensity or unpleasantness. Etymology : "Pain (n.) 1297, "punishment," especially for a crime; also (c.1300) "condition one feels when hurt, opposite of pleasure," from Old French peine, in turn from Latin poena, "punishment, penalty" (in L.L. also "torment, hardship, suffering") and that from Greek "ποινή" (poine), generally "price paid", "penalty", "punishment", from PIE *kwei- "to pay, atone, compensate" (...)." What's the different or major difference between liver pain and chest pain? Asked by Paul H - Sat May 16 22:28:25 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. If the pain comes after eating, I'd say it's more likely a gallbladder issue and not a liver issue. This is definitely something to speak to your PCP about or a gastroenterologist if you have one already. A HIDA scan w/ CCK was the ONLY test that showed the disease and they ran several on me (including a gallbladder ultrasound w/ cck) Good luck! *** Gallstones - Symptoms The most common symptom of gallstones is pain in the stomach area or in the upper right part of the belly, under the ribs. The pain may: * Develop suddenly in the center of the upper belly (epigastric area) and spread to the right upper back or shoulder blade area. It is usually hard to get comfortable; moving around does not make the pain go away. * Prevent… [cont.] Answered by I <3 the Holidays - Sat May 16 22:42:15 2009 What is Chronic pain and do I fit into the classification? Q. I've had headaches everyday for 6 years and I'm not sure what kind of headaches they are and neither does my neurologist. The levels of pain vary everyday. They are kind of a mixture of migraines, tension headaches and sinus headaches. I was just wondering if I could call that chronic pain. Asked by hurleygurlnfg - Tue Jul 28 18:34:41 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Chronic pain is continuous pain affecting the same area every day. Yes, you do fit into that classification. Answered by kenoplayer - Tue Jul 28 18:43:16 2009 What may be causing this pain during intercourse?
Q. I have both superficial and deep pain during intercourse. Mainly upon entry. It feels as if it is stretching or burning. I have been sexually active for four years. It's not because of STDs, inadequate lubrication, position, or not enough foreplay. Pain seems to have always been there, for as long as I can remember anyways. I am not sure if it is important to note that I get very painful periods but am on birth control and that seems to helps. I used to vomit from the extreme pain, and would have to leave school. Asked by Kitty - Mon Jun 1 13:45:36 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You poor thing. What an absolute nightmare. There's a couple of things that I've been tested for (with the same symptoms) - one is polycystic ovarian syndrome - PCOS (which I have) and the other is endometriosis (which a close friend has). You may also want to have a look at the symptoms for fibroids. You really need to get this checked out - first off by your GP, who should refer you to a gynaecologist. They will probably do a smear test and possibly an ultrasound to have a look and see what's going on. It's really important that you get this looked at as either of the above conditions, or anything else, may potentially affect your fertility in the future. Good luck. Blondie x PS - I'm not a Dr!!
