Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means "acquaintance with letters" (from Latin littera letter), and therefore the academic study of literature is known as Letters (as in the phrase "Arts and Letters"). In Western culture the most basic written literary types include fiction and nonfiction.

Do art and literature professors overinterpret other people's work?
Q. I have a literature professor that picks apart poems and gets all kinds of hidden meanings out of them. Can there be that much meaning in one poem? I noticed art teachers do this, too. How do they know if that is what the artist meant? Maybe they were painting a picture because it looked good, maybe they weren't trying to make some in depth political statement.

A. I very honestly think so. I've seen teachers do that. Being a writer, I look at my work and have others look at it, and they see more depth in it than I do! It's crazy!
