Literature,(from Latin littera letter), is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means acquaintance with letters (as in the Arts and Letters"). In Western culture the most basic written literary types include fiction and nonfiction.

Definitions

People sometimes perceive a difference between "literature" and some popular forms of written work. The terms "literary fiction" and "literary merit" serve to distinguish between individual works. Critics may exclude works from the classification "literature," for example, on the grounds of a poor standard of grammar and syntax, of an unbelievable or disjointed story-line, or of inconsistent or unconvincing characters. Genre fiction (for example: romance, crime, or science fiction) may also become excluded from consideration as "literature."

In scientific and other strictly factual writing, the "literature" of the subject is the whole body of writings about the subject.

How many literary awards are given a year?
Q. I have a research paper, and this would be one of my points to it. I need to know how many literary awards are given to books in this day and age. And maybe if you know how many awards were given to books/poems/etc in different, past time periods. This is a tricky one, so if you even have the slightest idea, I will be eternally grateful! Thank you.

A. This will be a matter of when you want to stop. There are so many now, often given for specific genres of literature, that you could end up with a very long list. Here are a few major ones with the first year they were awarded: Caldecott (for children's picture books): 1938 Newbery (for young adult literature): 1922 Nobel Prize for Literature: 1901 Pulitzer Prize (journalism): 1917 Edgar Award (mystery; also for screenplays and children's books): 1946 Orbis Pictus (children's nonfiction): 1990 National Book Award (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children's): 1950 These are all American awards except for the Nobel Prize, I believe. Also, try this link. I just found this; it contains most of these and a few others. Book awards from… [cont.]

How do you write an outline for a literary analysis paper?
Q. This is very important. If I don't hand it in to my English teacher by tomorrow, I'll get a zero. No exceptions. I have to write an outline for a literary analysis. I'm a freshman in high school, so this is my first time doing this. She gave us a paper of an example of how to write the outline for the literary analysis, but unfortunately, I left that at school and now I don't know how the outline should be done. Please, can someone write or give me an example of an outline for a literary analysis? I need to know the order in which to write things.

What are some examples of literary humor is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?
Q. Examples of irony, sattire, and other kinds of literary humor. References with chapter noted would be appreciated. I read the book up to chapter 23 like my teacher told me to. My final is coming up and I just want other people's perspectives on this topic.

A. Just look at the note from the author to the reader at the beginning. There's an easy one. Look for episodes where Huck's own understanding seems limited, but the reader's is much broader.
