The word catholic is derived (via Late Latin catholicus and French catholique) from the Greek adjective καθολικός (katholikos), meaning "universal". The word derives from the Greek phrase καθόλο (kath'holou) meaning "on the whole" or "in general" and is a combination of the Greek words κατά meaning "about" and όλος meaning "whole." In the context of Christian ecclesiology, it has a rich history and several usages.

The term has been incorporated into the name of the largest Christian communion, the Catholic Church, which consists of 23 churches sui iuris, in full communion with the Bishop of Rome. The largest of these, the Latin Rite, consists of nearly 95% of the population of the Catholic Church. The remaining 5% consist of the 22 Eastern Catholic Churches.

Many Protestants sometimes use the term "catholic church" to refer broadly to the Christian Church and all believers in Jesus Christ across the world and the ages, regardless of denominational affiliation. Generally, to avoid confusion between this concept and the Catholic Church, above, theologians (in English) will refer to the latter as the Church catholic, utilizing the lower-case.

The Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans and some Methodists believe that their churches are catholic in the sense that they are in continuity with the original universal church founded by the Apostles. The Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox churches all believe that their church is the only original and universal church. In "Catholic Christendom" (including the Anglican Communion), bishops are considered the highest order of ministers within the Christian religion, as shepherds of unity in communion with the whole church and one another. Catholicity is considered one of Four Marks of the Church, the others being unity, sanctity, and apostolicity. according to the Nicene Creed of 381: "I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church."

What did the Catholic Church did to bring people back during the protestanism age please help?
Q. What did the Catholic Church did to bring people back and stop the flood of people form leaving (this was during the protestanism age, Martin Luther, etc). Please help .

A. With numerous followers leaving to join Lutheranism and other Protestant religions, the Roman Catholic Church started the Counter-Reformation. The Counter-Reformation kept the hierarchy system of pope as the leader, then cardinals, bishops, etc. However, the Counter-Reformation marked the first time the Catholic Church addressed the complaints filed against them and actually tried to reform themselves such as halting the selling of indulgences, simony (paying/bribing to gain a church position), etc.

How does a Catholic wedding given by a Deacon differ from one given by a priest?
Q. My fiancee and I are having a terrible time trying to schedule our wedding- the priest doesn't have time to marry us until next June! The church offered the services of the permanent deacon to perform our wedding. I've never been to a Catholic wedding performed by a deacon- how would it be different? Is it still a sacramental marriage? Obviously it cannot be a full Mass, but can we still share the Eucharist with our guests?

A. The deacon cannot consecrate the Eucharist but he should be able to distribute Communion from the Tabernacle. Be sure to ask. Just about everything else is the same. With love in Christ.
