African Americans or Black Americans are citizens or residents of the United States who have origins in any of the black populations of Africa. In the United States, the terms are generally used for Americans with at least partial Sub-Saharan African ancestry. Most African Americans are the direct descendants of captive Africans who survived the slavery era within the boundaries of the present United States, although some are—or are descended from—immigrants from African, Caribbean, Central American or South American nations.

African-American history starts in the 17th century with indentured servitude in the American colonies and progresses onto the election of an African American as the 44th and current President of the United States – Barack Obama. Between those landmarks there were other events and issues, both resolved and ongoing, that were faced by African-Americans. Some of these were: slavery, reconstruction, development of the African American community, participation in the great military conflicts of the United States, racial segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement.

Black Americans make up the single largest racial minority in the United States and form the second largest racial group after whites in the United States.

Why is african american a widely spread term, but polish american isn't used as much?
Q. White people don't refer to themselves on an every day term as polish american, german american, yugoslavian american, irish american. They're just white. Is the term african american pushed on us, forcing us to use it?

A. I "push back". I insist on being called "European American" and actually add a "Box" and option on forms and correct people if they call me "white". That REALLY pi55es them off. I also think European Americans should "Invent" new names. Instead "Tawanda" or "Shamika" etc I think we should invent names that have no vowels - only consonants. How about "Grnk" ? or "Shtrp" ? Then we can act pi55ed when THEY look perplexed when they try to pronounce them.

How can an African American female dye and perm her hair without having it break off?
Q. I would like to color my hair a few weeks after I perm it so how long should I wait? I have heard and read countless stories of African American females saying their hair broke off when they tried to color it after perming it.

A. I would suggest waiting two to three weeks after perming to color hair. also a good hot oil treatment after color can really get you along way.

How did the following help to improve African American groups, and farmers during the years of 1880-1920/?
Q. I need some help on this cause I procrastinated. Analyze the ways in which state and federal legislation and judicial deciscions, including those of the Supreme court, affected the efforts of African American's and Farmers? Thanks in advance for any help. I know this is hard.

A. Go get your text book. Skim it until you come to laws that were passed in that time period, and skim for clues to answer your question. In my experience, the question-writer is looking for names of laws that were passed, followed by a brief statement on their significance, vs a general sort of answer. This might be faster than waiting for a history buff to notice your question.

  • I am America. I am the part you won't recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.
  • The common goal of 22 million Afro-Americans is respect as human beings, the God-given right to be a human being. Our common goal is to obtain the human rights that America has been denying us. We can never get civil rights in America until our human rights are first restored. We will never be recognized as citizens there until we are first recognized as humans.
