Celibacy is defined as the lifestyle of someone who is voluntarily abstaining from all sexual activities (also known as "abstinence"), possibly remaining unmarried all his/her life. It is often incorrectly used to refer to a mixed, an involuntary, or even temporary abstinence from sexual relations – the word "celibacy", when it appears by itself, is properly defined as being a freely chosen state of practicing sexual abstinence, usually in the context of an unmarried state.

What is the difference between chastity and celibacy?
Q. The catholic church says that gays should be chaste or celibate. Does that mean that they have to be alone all theirr lives and nver fall in love and have a relationship? Being homosexual is not about sex but rather being in love. The only difference is it with a person of the same sex. So what are they saying?

A. Chastity relates to virginity, and keeping it until you are married. Once married, a woman is to be chaste in her dealings with others. Being chaste includes faithfulness to her husband, and being pure in thought and deed.

Is this common after a long bout of celibacy?
Q. I lost my virginity at the age of 14. I was sexually active from the ages of 16 until I was 22. Then, I was celibate for 5 years. When I recently had sex for the first time in 5 years, I was very tight and I bled a little. It was painful, too. Is this common for people who are long time celibate?

A. Yes. I never "sleep around" I only had sex when I was in committed relationships (now I am married). When there would be a big break in between relationships, and we would finally have sex, it was always a little tight and painful...like losing my virginity all over again! Totally normal.

Planning to go into lifelong celibacy. Any tips or suggestions?
Q. For personal reasons that many people would not understand or accept, I have decided to go in celibacy for life in all aspects. Are there any suggestions or resources anyone has to start this process. I know it is going to be hard but it is something I have realized that I must do to grow as a person and focus on my strengths.

A. Even if you are not religious, I would suggest you try talking with a priest, nun, or other celibate clergyman. They will probably be respectful of you, and they certainly have experience and an understanding of what it takes to remain celibate. Good luck.
